Subdivision of the year: How the Atherwood Neighborhood Set the Tone for Uniquely Silicon Valley Communities

02/27/26

If you’ve ever driven through Redwood City and noticed a sudden shift toward sleek lines and expansive glass, you’ve likely found yourself in Atherwood.

Developed in 1950, Atherwood is one of the most significant collections of original Eichler homes in the region. While many neighborhoods feature a mix of styles, this subdivision is defined by a consistent, intentional architectural DNA that remains a landmark of modern suburban design.

A Vision for Modern Living

Joseph Eichler was a post-war developer who moved away from traditional housing styles to introduce high-end modern design to a broader audience. Atherwood was his first major project in San Mateo County, serving as the blueprint for his later famous developments.

Its impact was immediate: In December 1950, Architectural Forum named Atherwood one of four "Subdivisions of the Year" in the United States.

Iconic Architectural Features

The 64 original homes in Atherwood represent a specific era of Eichler’s work, designed by the renowned architectural firm Anshen and Allen. These homes are celebrated for several innovative features:

  • The Butterfly Roof: Atherwood was the first housing tract in California to feature the "butterfly" roof, a V-shaped line that angles upward at the edges, creating a striking silhouette against the sky.
  • Floor-to-Ceiling Glass: These homes are designed to maximize natural light. Large glass walls look out onto outdoor spaces, creating a seamless transition between the interior and exterior of the home.
  • Post-and-Beam Construction: This structural method allowed for open floor plans and non-load-bearing interior walls, providing a sense of volume and flow that was radical for the 1950s.

A Living Legacy

Because the neighborhood was developed as a single, cohesive unit by Eichler Homes, Inc., the visual consistency of the streetscape is remarkably preserved. The gentle loop of the streets was designed to limit through-traffic, emphasizing a layout that prioritizes a sense of place.

Today, Atherwood remains a premier destination for anyone who appreciates the history of California’s mid-century modern movement and the enduring beauty of glass, wood, and light.
